Program management is the function of leading and / or supporting the overall success of multiple initiatives, project managers, and project teams, in the areas of:

  • scope definition and management;

  • approach, including business process, organizational structure, software architecture, and technology planning and prioritization;

  • project planning and tracking;

  • constraint identification and handling;

  • risk identification and mitigation;

  • issue resolution;

  • appropriate and available staffing; and

  • status communication and evaluation.

The effective application of program management in an organization reaps the following benefits:

  • Minimization of misdirected investment, through clarity of organizational purposes and alignment of initiatives to those purposes;

  • Minimization of rework within projects, through early concurrence on scope and approach, and early identification and resolution of risks and issues;

  • Increases in reuse of project results on subsequent projects, due to improved quality and visibility, in turn through ongoing attention to quality management.

To achieve these benefits, KnowledgeWise provides the following program management services that deliver results in the areas listed above.

All such services can be scaled and adjusted to the size, maturity, and situation of an organization.

  • Creation of organization-specific templates for proposals, statements-of-work, and supporting project documents, for both internal initiatives and projects for external customers;

  • Guidance to project and proposal teams and managers in the development of materials in the areas listed above, using these templates;

  • Reviews of proposals for thoroughness, quality, risk identification and mitigation, and planning;

  • Reviews of projects in-progress, emphasizing ongoing attention in the areas listed above;

  • Content contributions in the areas of process, organization, software, and technology; and

  • Participation in and guidance to program and organizational steering committees.

KnowledgeWise program management consulting services can fit into an organization in at least the following three ways:

  • As a staff position, reporting directly to the Vice-President or Director of Operations, Engineering, IT, or QA;

  • As a project manager, with part-time program management responsibilities; or

  • As a functional or line manager, with some organizational management responsibilities and part-time program management responsibilities.
